Words from the Bible

Matthew 7:24-27

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.  And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: [ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

My name is Gwendoline Howell, I was six year's old on that fateful night 31 January, 50 years ago  and at home in Manor Terrace with my Mum, Dad and Granddad Davies.

The day was bitterly cold and very windy which grew steadily worse as night time approached. After tea I had a bath, then to bed with a favourite teddy bear. Later that night my Mum woke me up and told me to get dressed. Shortly afterwards the lights went out and we were plunged into darkness, our only light a candle. I was frightened. Outside back and front we were surrounded by water. At high tide the water was level with the top of our front doorstep, and due to the fact it turned at that moment we were saved from water coming in.

Not so for my grandparents and uncle who lived in West End View (now Landguard Road). Granddad having suffered a stroke slept down stairs and was drowned, my uncle found him half in and half out of bed. In their home the water almost reached the top of the stairs. I remember my dad desperately wanted to get to them but my mum would not let him go for fear of him being drowned.  I also lost school friends who lived in the prefabs. We went to Langer school and that was under water. We were evacuated to Causton School in Maidstone Road. On returning back to Langer there were all these empty desks. I remember coming home and asking where my friends were and I can remember my mum saying gently that they were with Jesus.

That tragic and terribly devastating night of terror and following days I will never forget. Forty lost their lives, thirteen of them were children, the youngest a baby of six month's.

My painful memories lead me to say that Houses should never be build of this flood plain. It is Irresponsible of those planning to do this. Future generations will be put at risk who don't know the history of the area.

What is Truth ?

John 18:38   "What is truth?" Pilate asked.

A question asked 2000 years ago to one who could say       "I came into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.."

Suddenly it seems that the Governor Pilate is on trial and not Christ .

The Lord Jesus Christ used the illustration  of a foolish man building on the sand with regard to His teaching .spiritually and practically and the inevitable results as to when this is done.

Let's hear the Truth !
