Plaque Unveiled 1st October 2008 on completion of Sea Defence Work.
- A unveiling ceremony was held to mark the completion of the Felixstowe Sea Defence
work with speeches before invited guests and members of the public watching as the
ribbon was cut by David Coe Chairman of the Regional flood Group and Jim Bidwell
Chairman of the Suffolk Coastal Council,
- Thanks were expressed to those responsible for the scheme and it was encouraging
to hear such phrases when referring to the 1953 floods ”It must never be allowed
to happen again” which no doubt left some of the listeners wondering whether Council
plans to actually build new houses on the land metres away from where the ceremony
was taking place as to the sincerity of such statements.
- Happily though Felixstowe was described as the “Jewel in the Crown of Suffolk” the
invigorating air praised, and the fact that there was simply nowhere to beat it,
which residents of course know to be true.
- Winter North Easterly Gales will try the scheme if it is going to work as the sea
once more landscapes the now revitalized beach. Many doubters watch in anticipation,
and wonder at the claims of flood protection for the next century.
